Unemployment insurance benefits are important and you should know the process and your rights.
If you have questions about how to apply for unemployment insurance benefits; if you applied for unemployment insurance and were denied; or if your former employer is protesting your claim for benefits, please contact us to discuss how we can help.
We counsel and represent clients at all stages of the unemployment insurance process including the interview, telephone hearings, before the Board of Review, and in court.
Workplace agreements are important and you do not want to give up your rights unknowingly.
If you have recently been laid-off or terminated from your job and your employer has offered you a separation or severance agreement you should have an attorney review it before you sign it. We can explain such agreements to you in practical terms, help you determine if you are being asked to give up more than you are being offered, and work to negotiate for better terms on your behalf.
If your employer or a prospective employer has asked you to sign:
- an employment contract;
- a non-compete or non-solicitation agreement;
- a trade secret or confidentiality agreement;
- an arbitration agreement;
- or any other agreement regarding the terms and conditions of your employment, your right to work for other employers, or an agreement that limits your ability to enforce your rights against your employer,
you should know what the agreement means in practical terms before you sign it.
We can review your agreement and advise you of the effects that it may have on your rights at work. In appropriate circumstances we can contact your employer on your behalf to negotiate for better terms.
There are a variety of Illinois and Federal laws (and even some Chicago and Cook County ordinances) that provide individuals with certain rights at work. For example, there are laws that:
• Prohibit employers (and co-workers) from
discriminating, harassing and retaliating against
employees;
• Provide job protection for employees who are on
sick and/or parental leave, need to care for an ill
family member, or are in the military;
• Require that employers pay the compensation,
commission and bonuses they promised;
• Require employers to pay overtime and minimum
wage to qualified employees;.
• Prevent employers from giving knowingly false
negative references; and
• Prevent co-workers from interfering with your
employment relationships.
If you think that an employer, former or prospective employer, or a co-worker may have violated your workplace rights, please contact us to discuss the situation. We can help you determine whether you may have a claim, and work with you on developing a practical solution that fits your needs.
